What is drought?

Drought is defined as a long period of below-average precipitation. New Mexico is an extremely arid state and is prone to water short periods. Drought can have a negative impact on all aspects of New Mexico and its environment and economy, including environmental and ecological health, agriculture, public water supplies, and tourism.

How does New Mexico monitor drought?

ew Mexico has Drought Monitoring Work Group, which is chaired by the State Climatologist and includes both State and Federal partners, that meets monthly to discuss current drought conditions.  Results from these meetings are posted on the Governor’s Drought Task Force website.            

Why plan for drought?

Drought planning can help alleviate the negative impacts of drought when one does occur. Planning efforts can include actions such as developing drought response plans, changing agricultural management practices, and investing in infrastructure improvements for public water systems.
